07/07 Thatcham Marsh LNR

Location: Thatcham Marsh LNR CES visit 2019.07
Session: 07-Jul-2019 06:00 to 11:00hrs
Notes: We had a good session for visit 07, 63 from the standard nets is above the average of 55 for the 27 years of this CES; range for visit 07 is 1993 & 1995 109, 2008 28. A new species for the CES was a juvenile Nuthatch. This year Chiffchaffs are already doing well above the norm with a total of 38 so far. A 2015 Blue Tit and 2015 and 2016 ringed Bullfinches are good recoveries. The latter is becoming a scarce resident here compared to just a few years ago. Juvenile Cetti’s Warblers have yet to make an appearance, they usually first occur visit 06 however numbers are quite low this year over the marsh, so we are not expecting a bumper year.
Weather: Sunny periods, calm, warm

Sightings 31 Species: We heard the first Water Rail of the season on this visit. We don’t think they bred in the vicinity of the standard net ride as they have done for most of the life of the CES. Unsurprising since more than half of the reed was cut; it is now about waist high, so the rails now have somewhere to hide.
