23/07 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 23-Jul-2019 07:00 to 10:50hrs
Notes: It was very quiet when I put the nets up that is until I put the audio on. What followed was a never-ending stream of mostly sylvia warblers with a few phylos and later some tits and some of the flock of Goldfinch that are feeding the “weed” seed heads in the enclosure; here they are not cropped by the cattle. Unusual was the first Greenfinch for a while and a juvenile Nuthatch; the first here since 2014, We also had the 4th Lesser Whitethroat and we haven’t reached the peak migration week for this species. At around 10:00hrs the movement slowed to a stop as the breeze livened up.
Weather: Foggy early, clearing to bright sun, very warm, calm until the last 30 minutes or so when it was breezy.
Present: JL, IW, DL
Nets: 49metres in three rides up from 07:30 to 10:30hrs
Lure (audio): warbler, misc. migrants, redstart intermittently
