17/10 Greeenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: Thursday 17-Oct-2019 07:20 to 10:20hrs
Notes: Second session this week, weather was forecast to remain dry until about 10:00hrs. As with most recent visits more Blue Tits than expected. It seems to have been a good year for both Blue and Great Tits, indicating a good post fledging survival. I started up my three feeders last week and already food is going faster than in recent years; hope my finances can keep up. Small groups of Redwings were going over South-west for most of the morning, some dipped down towards both the Latvia and Scandinavian songs and calls. None appeared to land in the enclosure scrub, so it was a bit of a surprise to find one in the net. A dark individual, quite long-winged. Even more interesting, on the next round was a Song Thrush. Just before the round I had mentioned that this species was scarce here this year, having not detected one for some time. It was also a long-winged dark individual. Both were probably of Scandinavian origin, but as both species were the first for quite a while who knows. I had intended to stay until10:30hrs for nets down, but just as had been forecast, around 10:00hrs the sky darkened, so we quickly took the nets down; it began raining quite heavily as I opened the gate to leave the common.
Weather: sunny period, warming up, breezy.
Present: JL, IW
Nets: 48metres in three rides of 18m, 18m, 12m up from 08:00 to 10:30hrs
Lure (audio): autumn, BCCCGCFC, Meadow Pipit, Yellow-browed Warbler intermittently
