28/07 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure

Session: 28-Jul-2020, 07:10 to 10:45hrs

Notes: It was a bit blustery today and I did not expect much success. When I entered the enclosure a flock of 25+ Greenfinches flew west out from the scrub. The flock had gathered late last week in the nearby scrub and I assumed them to be some of the progeny of the birds nesting on the common. A recapture proved otherwise and showed that some had come from Thatcham or at least they had visited there wherever they had fledged. It seems that most of the Greenfinch flock filtered back as the first round consisted of seven Greenfinches and two Blackcaps, followed by 10 more Greenfinches the next round as well as three Willow Warblers. The last few rounds produced two more and we must have ringed about 60% of the flock.

Present: JL,IW

Weather: cloudy early then clearing, warm, blustery breeze, clouding over late in the session.

Nets: 48metres in 3 net rides, two 18M and one 12M net up from 07:30 to 10:30hrs

Lure (Audio): (playlists) Warblers, Misc Migrants, Redstart, intermittently.

Recaptures:(1) Greenfinch ringed 20/06/2020 Thatcham

Sightings 28 Species: Two more Swifts today and three House Martins. Apart from the Greenfinches the only other species of note are four Bullfinches possibly more including at least a pair of adults; the two others deduced from calls coming from the nearby woodland.
