01/09 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 01-Sep-2020, 07:30 to 11:20hrs
Notes: Good conditions again today produced the best capture over the last week or so. A good variety of species. The Firecrest was probably the best bird, we don’t expect to ring Bullfinch often at this site and the Sedge Warbler is probably the only one to be ringed by the group this year due to the Thatcham Marsh LNR net rides being impenetrable; this will be the first year since 1967 that good numbers of the latter have not been ringed. Another Stonechat is the 14th ringed this year, the best total since we began ringing  here in 2009.

1st CY Male Firecrest

1st CY Sedge Warbler

1st CY Bullfinch male, note the red/pink feathers below the eye and below the wing

Present: JL,IW
Weather: Sunny bright, warm calm.
Nets: 48metres in 3 net rides, two 18M and one 12M net up from 08:00 to 11:00hrs
Lure (Audio): Warblers, Misc Migrants, Redstart, Hirundine intermittently.

Recaptures: (0)
Sightings 34 Species: In addition to the species mentioned above, a Tree Pipit flew over just as we finished erecting the nets and a Spotted Flycatcher was bathing with finches in the flood water. The Red Kite, also bathing, was in the bunker pool. The Buzzard flew low into the wood as I left.
