Common Western Enclosure Week 40
Session:29-Sep-2020, 07:30 to
11:10hrs
Notes: A dull overcast session with more Chiffchaffs than Blackcaps. There had
been several Siskins and Redpoll flying about yesterday, so I tried luring them
with calls today. Unfortunately, we only detected one Redpoll all session and
that was a flyover just as we were leaving after nets down. A mixed flock of
Meadow Pipit, Greenfinch and Goldfinch landed in the enclosure trees and we expected
to capture one or two but had to settle for two more Chiffchaffs.
Present: JL,IW
Weather: Drizzle while nets were erected then dull overcast
with a couple of bright periods, cool, light breeze. .
Nets: 48metres in 3 net
rides, two 18M and a 12M net up from 08:00 to 11:00hrs
Lure
(Audio): Warblers, Misc Migrants, Autumn, SK/LR, Wryneck, Yellow-browed
Warbler intermittently.
Session:
Present: JL,IW
Recaptures: (none)
Sightings 35 Species: It was run of the mill stuff early. I thought I heard Redwing and Dartford Warbler without being certain and Ian found the first Song Thrush for a good few weeks. A loll in the capture about 10:00hrs for nearly an hour including the weather brightening up, proved to be a purple patch for us. First, I definitely heard Dartford Warbler and we found one probably two out on the heath to the west of the enclosure. Next seven Redwings flew over, the first for us this winter period. After this Ian spotted four or five Blackbirds in the trees south of the enclosure. As we walked to get closer, we realised that one was a bright male Ring Ouzel soon joined by another duller ouzel. Later another flock of six Redwings flew over.
