03/10 Thatcham Marsh LNR

Location: Thatcham Marsh LNR
Session: 03/10/2021, 07:30 to 11:40hrs
Notes: Only few warblers today, most having left: a couple Blackcaps and a few Chiffchaffs, a straggler Reed Warbler, also a Reed Bunting that we called in. We noticed that House Martins were going through low down, so we switched from Scarce Migrants to Hirundine audio early in the session and called about 30 down almost immediately, including some Swallows, unfortunately they swooped low over the nets near the speaker a couple of times before heading west .
Present: JL,IW,DL,JHW,MEK,NC
Weather: Overcast early, some blue sky later, calm, westerly breeze later, cool.
Nets: 198metres in 1 ride of 198M up from 08:00 to 11:00hrs
Lures: Audio – Sylvia and Phylos Warblers, Crests, Yellow-browed Warbler, Reed Bunting, Hirundine.

The Blackcap re-trapped last weekend (26/09) had been ringed at Queen Mary Reservoir, Surrey 16/09/2021 56KM 10days.

Sightings: We haven’t recorded a Pheasant here for a while, not a bird you want to see near mist nets. Reed Buntings have not been detected by us since early September, this morning at least four called from the reed bed at nets up. There seemed to be a few more Moorhens than usual calling and a Raven flew north.
