04/10 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure Week 40
Session: 04/10/2021, 07:30 to 10:50hrs
Notes: Rained off last Thursday and Friday (30 & 01) so pleased to be able to get to the enclosure today. Weather conditions were good but a bit bright on the nets. Changed the audio to late autumn birds as I expect most Garden Warblers etc are at the Mediterranean Coast or in Africa now. The session started with Long-tailed Tits that looked to be a new group as they were all new birds. All other captures of this species so far this year have included birds already ringed. At nets down we found another Firecrest in the net, the seventh ringed this year by the group, our best year ever. We have usually ringed many Goldcrest by now, in recent years we are well into double figures but they are late this year, if they are coming; total so far for 2021 ten. Tomorrow looks rubbish weather-wise.
Sorry can't resist another photo of these little birds, another 1CY male, our third here so far this year.
The NRG has ringed 39, the first in 1986 near Hermitage (Jim Stollery), the only one ringed by the group in the last century, all the others have been since 2002. From 2012 eighteen have been ringed at the Western Enclosure to date.
Present: JL,IW
Weather: Sunny bright , light south-westerly breeze stronger later, cool
Nets: 48metres in 3 rides of 18M, 18M, 12M up from 08:00 to 10:30hrs
Lures Audio:  BC-CC-FC-GC, Yellow-browed Warbler, Meadow Pipit, Thrushes (Fieldfare, Redwing)

Recaptures:(none)

Sightings: Of note today were: Mistle Thrushes and a Song Thrush that dropped down from high up and appeared interest in the winter thrush audio.
