07/10 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure Week 40
Session: 07/10/2021, 07:30 to 10:50hrs
Notes: Ideal conditions so expectations were high. Two thrushes dropped down into the top of one of the birches out on the heath and proved to be Redwings, the first of the autumn for us. They flew to the enclosure lured by the audio but jinked over the nets. Later we ringed a Song Thrush with a 120mm wing length (brits are usually around 115mm) that could have been continental in origin.

1st CY male Goldcrest, not so good with the eyeliner as their close cousin
Present: JL,IW
Weather: Overcast warm calm
Nets: 48metres in 3 rides of 18M, 18M, 12M up from 08:00 to 10:30hrs
Lures Audio:  BC-CC-FC-GC, Yellow-browed Warbler, Meadow Pipit, Thrushes (Fieldfare, Redwing)

Recaptures:(none)

Sightings: I keep expecting that any hirundine seen will be the last of the year, it being almost mid-October but still they keep coming. The Swallows went west fast, and the House Martins were high up and drifting south, spotted in the background by IW when looking at a high-flying Cormorant. Not sure how many Golden Plover, they called unseen from in the mirk. One of the best species counts we’ve had  recently.
