17/07 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure wk29
Session: 17/07/2024 07:30 to 11:10hrs
Notes: a quiet morning movement-wise with only few Chiffchaff about in numbers. Looking at last years matching visit and the charts juvenile Garden Warbler should be moving through this week and peaking next week, similarly Willow Warbler numbers should be building towards a week 32 peak, but so far this year there are very few about. We nearly had a Magpie to ring, but it got out of the net as we approach fortunately for the wellbeing of our hands.
Present: JL,IW.
Weather: sunny bright, cloudy later, calm, hot
Nets: 48metres 3 Rides, up from 08:00 to 10:30 hrs.

Lures audio: (Warbler), (Misc Migrants), (RT), (GH) intermittently.

Recaptures: (01)

Willow Warbler ringed: 27/06/2023.

Sightings: Several large flocks of Jackdaw flew off west from the bunker colony during the morning. A family party of Woodlark flew up when we went looking for Grayling butterflies. The sighting of the morning was the female Adder basking in the sunlight. It came out a couple of times but by the time I raised my camera phone to get a photo it disappeared under the gorse; haven’t seen one at the western end of the common for many years.
