Notes: We expected to be rained off as the forecast
was for 40%+ rain mid-morning. Apart from an early shower it held off for the
rest of the session. Lots of Redwing flocks landed in and around the enclosure through
the session but none netted; disappointing as I had been over on Wednesday and
cut most of the scrub along the rides down to below net height. It looked as if
it was going to be a quiet session as until just before 10:00hrs we had ring
just three Goldcrest. However, on the penultimate net round we caught a tit
flock of 16+ birds, mostly Blue Tits but also a couple of Coal Tits and three
re-trap Long-tailed Tits. We processed these and returned to the enclosure to
take the nets down and where we extracted the last Goldcrest, however Ian after
releasing the net guy was reeling in towards the other end of the net when a flock
of Long-tailed Tits (20+) flew in the other end of net causing him to have to
re-erect and re-guy the net so that we could remove the 11 netted birds.
Lures audio: (BC-CC-FC-GC), (FF-RE), (YB-RT-FC-GC-YB) intermittently.
Sightings: More Blackbirds than usual about, probably wintering continentals. Several flocks of Redwing came in mostly from the west throughout the morning in groups of around 30, each group paused to investigate the audio lures before moving off north northeast. Four Chaffinch flew over calling, the first here for a while and a single Lesser Redpoll (or should I say Redpoll now) also called as it flew north; my first of the year. Otherwise not much moving.
