Notes: Trampled a ride through
the long grass in front of the colony bank. Up to 140 birds present. Wind was
disturbing the nets a little on occasions. First round was of 3 birds about as
expected, since we can only set the nets about 3 to 4 metres (north side of
pond) from the face of the bank due to over-hanging vermin fencing erected to
prevent stoat attack. The second round produced 13; a good capture, the third
round 6 and the fourth 3. By this time the light was just beginning to go though
the sun was still up so we took the nets down (extracting a further 5 birds) to give the birds time to go to
roost before the light went. We managed to avoid trampling the southern marsh
orchid growing at the east end of the ride though we had a couple of near
misses.
