18/07 Greenham Common Western Enclosure

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 18-Jul-2016 06:00 to 10:30hrs
Headlines: Today looks to be the best (calmest) day of the week so I rearranged a few things; I don’t normally do Mondays. Glad I did as we had a really good morning and not due to species I would have thought we would capture at this time of year. It turned out to be a bit of a finch feast. A Reed Warbler captured totally out of its normal habitat showed that return migration has started. This was followed by a Sedge Warbler that had been ringed elsewhere; looking forward to finding out where. More expected were Blackcaps, Whitethroats, Garden Warblers, Chiffchaffs and a Willow Warbler; thought the last would be the main capture, maybe next time. I have never tried Linnet song before with any success but today unless by some happy coincidence it worked well. It seemed to attract Greenfinch and Goldfinch. Had we stayed longer we may have captured even more as there were plenty of them about. Sadly the tits continue to show they are struggling with just two adult Great Tit and one, yes one, juvenile Blue Tit. Mind you had they been at normal levels, given the other species we captured, I think we would have struggled somewhat.

Garden Warbler Adult (usually smart looking birds this one was a bit scruffy)
Sedge Warbler Juvenile
Linnet Juvenile
Tried to get photo's of the Reed Warbler and Meadow Pipit but they would not keep still for long enough.
Sightings 38 Species: Quite active on the common today. It started with at least 10 Blackbirds leaving the enclosure when I arrived. In the fog I heard Swifts screaming. As well as the many finches flying about a family party of five Stonechats was new and six Woodlarks, hopefully five were those I ringed recently. The best bird of the day for me was the Hobby that zoomed around for a few seconds before flying over the wood north.
